Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine

Blood banking and transfusion medicine is the process of collecting, testing, storing and the use of blood in medical practice. This is a cornerstone of modern medicine in that it is a necessary element of surgery and emergency medicine. The entire process is dependent upon clinical laboratories and their attendant staff for ensuring the safe use of blood and its component elements. In this country, 23 million units of blood are transfused into patients. Blood transfusion is the process of introducing the blood or blood components of one person into the bloodstream of another. Beyond its uses in surgery and the treatment of trauma patients, blood transfusions are also necessary for the treatment of severe anemia which is often caused as a result of chemotherapy, thalassemia, sickle cell disease, and cancer.

Blood banking begins with volunteers who donate their blood at blood banks or blood drives. Approximately 40,000 units of red blood are used every day in the United States and four million patients will need to receive blood every year. Donors must be at least 17 years of age, in good health, over 110 pounds and pass a screening test concerning possible communicable diseases carried by the donor. In most cases, donors give one unit of blood, or a pint, in a given session. The fluid lost will be replaced within 24 hours but the red blood cells lost may take up to two months to be replenished.

Once collected the blood is then screened for diseases such as Hepatitis, HIV, HTLV, Syphilis, and West Nile Virus. Once blood has been determined to be safe, it is then placed in storage in the blood bank where it can be held for as long as 42 days or frozen and kept for a period as long as ten years.

Once a patient has a need for blood, it is vital that they receive the correct type of blood to avoid potential problems. The blood is separated by type and then given to the correct patient based upon compatibility screening. Once this has been determined, the patient receives the blood transfusion.
