Clinical Pathologist

In the most general sense, pathology is the study of disease, and deals with the body's body chemistry. They utilize the body's own fluids and waste products to diagnose. Generally, this includes blood, urine, feces, phlegm (also known as sputum), as well as spinal, abdominal, joint and lung fluids. Should a pathologist note an usual imbalance in your body chemistry, they will probably want to conduct further examination on you, because it may be indicative of disease.

There are two major branches to pathology - anatomical pathology and clinical pathology. Anatomical pathology deals with diagnosing disease through examining entire organs, tissues and even autopsies and their chemical immunologic and molecular examination. Clinical pathologists, on the other hand, work to diagnose disease by sampling a patient's bodily fluids and/or tissues. Their work takes place in the laboratory - utilizing chemistry, microbiology, hematology and molecular pathology, and generally takes place on a much smaller scale than its counterpart although their work often does coincide. Clinical pathologists generally work with medical technologists (bachelor's degree) in hospitals and serve as a reference to physicians. Often times, clinical pathology and anatomical pathology work together. Many pathologists work in both fields, which is sometimes called general pathology.

Clinical pathology also has subspecialties itself - the most common being clinical chemistry, clinical hematology, clinical microbiology and hematopathology. Clinical hematology works with the blood and blood forming organs and work to diagnose blood disease. Depending on what they are testing the patient for, they will use a specific test. For example, a high level of white blood cell count could indicate infection in the patient. Clinical chemistry works with the patient's bodily fluids specifically, usually blood or urine. Clinical microbiologists work to test non-human life within the body such as fungi, bacteria, viruses and parasites that can cause diseases. Hematopathologists study specifically the hematopoietic cells in the body. This field generally deals with the diagnosis of lymphoma and leukemia and works a patient's bone marrow, lymph nodes, and other tissues. Cytogenetics, the study of the gene/chromosomal structure and its related function, is also considered to be a subspecialty of clinical pathology.
