Endovenous Laser Therapy

The Endovenous Laser Therapy procedure is an updated alternative to the customary vein stripping treatment. The updated procedure is faster than before and can be performed under local anesthesia with minimal pain. After the procedure there is a rather pain-less and quick recovery time. During this recovery a physician will use an ultrasound machine to examine and map out the vein to be treated.

The procedure is completed in less than an hour. It begins with the area to be treated numbed with local anesthetic. After which a thin laser fiber is inserted into the vein using an appropriate tube called a sheath. When the fiber is correctly placed laser energy is applied as the physician slowly pulls the fiber through the length of the vein. Laser energy heat is applied in short pulses heating the vein from within causing it to shrink, breakdown, and sealed shut. After shut the healthy veins take control and redirect blood flow back toward the heart. .

Once the procedure is completed you can return to regular daily activities immediately and it is recommended that you walk directly after the procedure. Intense physical activity should be refrained from for 3 to 4 weeks. During the first 3 to 5 days you may see some bruising or soreness however walking or taking a light pain reliever will relieve any pain or distress. .

The Endovenous Laser Therapy for varicose veins has multiple benefits including: Easy and quick procedure. (Completed within an hour.)
  • Performed under local anesthetic.
  • Reduced pain with minimal risk of scarring and postoperative infection.
  • Fast recovery with relatively no pain after the procedure.
  • Daily routine can be resumed immediately.
  • Amazing clinical and aesthetic results.
  • Before and After

    After The Procedure

Once the procedure is completed you will need to wear compression stockings for 1 week. During this week you may continue your daily routine, however it is encouraged that you do walk right after the procedure. Strenuous physical activity should be avoided for 3 to 4 weeks.

For 7 to 10 days after the procedure you may see some bruising and soreness within the treated areas. Taking over-the-counter (specifically non-asiprin) pain relievers will reduce the pain and bruising as needed.

The success of the Endovenous Laser Therapy procedure for varicose veins has been documented in clinical results and published. As with all medical procedures, the Endovenous Laser Therapy procedure has potential risk that your physician can clear up for you in terms as to how they apply to you. While the Endovenous Laser Therapy procedure will treat most causes of varicose veins it may be necessary for additional therapy in some cases. In which a dermatologists will provide a follow-up therapy.

How does the Endovenous Laser Therapy procedure work?
A small laser fiber is inserted into the vein walls after the area is numbed with a local anesthetic. Once inserted the laser heats the vein walls damaging them and causing them to shrink. The collapsed vein then stops blood from flowing through it. However there is no concern here because your blood automatically uses your remaining healthy veins in your legs to return blood to your heart.

What are the potential complications for the procedure?
As with any medical procedure there are potential complications. While complications from the EVLT procedure are rare, the risk does exist for vessel perforation, pulmonary embolism (a loose blood clot traveling to the lungs), phlebitis (vein wall infection), bruising, paresthesia (numbness or tingling) and skin burns.

Am I at risk of being harmed by the laser?
The major risks with this surgery are related to the complications listed above. However, there is also a risk of the laser firing outside your body. For protection against this rare occurrence, both you and the surgery staff will wear protective goggles during the procedure.

Is the Endovenous Laser Therapy procedure covered by my insurance?
Possibly. For a direct answer it is recommenced that you check with your insurance provider. It is typically seen that insurance coverage is determined on a case by case casis, in which insurance companies may decide whether or not to cover treatment based on medical necessity.

How successful is the Endovenous Laser Therapy procedure?
The success of the Endovenous Laser Therapy procedure has been monumental, so much in fact that success rates are as high as those of the conventional surgical approach accepted as the "standard" treatment. The procedure has proven to be successful in treating most varicose vein cases however in a some cases additional therapy is needed.
