When you have a fracture it is fundamental that you take care of it sooner than later. Depending on the site of the fracture, the severity and course of action to repair it varies. Fractures can range in location from your skull to your ribs to your wrist. Although it is more urgent that you seek medical attention if you have a skull fracture over a wrist fracture, you need to take care of it right away.

The first thing you may want to do if you suspect that you have a fracture is to put the affected region of your body in a splint to hold it in place and assure that you do not damage it any more. There is not much else that you can do when you think that you may have a fracture. The only person who can actually diagnose a fracture is a doctor upon the completion of taking an x-ray.

After you put the fracture in a splint you may want to place ice on it and elevate it to relieve any pain that you may be experiencing. This will also help out with any pressure that you could be unknowingly putting on it causing it further damage. The next step is to go to the doctor and have an x-ray or an ultrasound taken. The fracture could be cured with the aid of a cast, surgery, or both.

The pain and swelling of your fracture could last a few weeks to a month. Once the swelling goes down so will most of the pain associated with it. In time the bone will heal forming a soft callus and eventually turning in to a hard callus. After the hard callus is formed the bone will essentially heal.

Only a physician can determine the extent of the damage caused to your bone from the fracture. Your doctor is also the sole person who can design a personal plan for you to care for your fracture. Seeking medical attention at the first sign of a fracture is the key to the quickest possible healing process.
