The Gallbladder

The gallbladder is responsible for storing and concentrating bile, a fluid that helps the digestive process. It is a small, pear-shaped organ that connects to the liver through the hepatic duct. The most common affliction to the gallbladder is cholecystitis, or inflammation of the gallbladder. The typical cause of this inflammation is a gallstone, also known as a cholelith.

There are several procedures used to remove gallstones, including gallbladder surgery. Sometimes it is necessary to remove the entire gallbladder. Many doctors have switched from traditional open gallbladder surgery and now offer laparoscopic gallbladder surgery if the gallbladder must be removed.
