Underlying Problem Requiring Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastectomy):
Gynaecomastia is the enlargement of the male breast as a result of an abnormal and excessive increase in the breast glandular tissue. It may be linked to disease, the use of certain prescription drugs, or genetics and affects an estimate of 40-60% males. Some of them feel self-conscious because of their overdeveloped breasts perhaps due to obesity or weight loss, while others suffer from neck and back pains brought about by their heavier fronts thus, resorting to male breast reduction.

Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastectomy) Procedure:

Male breast reduction surgery may be performed on an outpatient basis, either in a hospital or surgical office. It may be done under general or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the procedure, patient’s preference or doctor’s judgment.

During the procedure, liposuction is used to eliminate fatty tissues. Small incisions, usually less than a half inch, are made around the nipple and other areas in the chest. A thin hollow metal tube called cannula is inserted, moved back and forth, and used to suck and remove the loosened fatty tissues like a vaccum. Some tissues may be removed using a scalpel to correct gynecomastia. The incisions are then sutured with dissolvable sutures.The incisions are then covered and dressed, and the chest may be wrapped in a bandage to keep the skin tight and firm in place. The duration of the surgery will take about 1 to 3 hours depending on the patient’s case. Most patients get to go home on the same day of the surgery while some stay in the hospital for a few more days.

Recovery from Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastectomy):

While the incisions heal, there will be some bruising and swelling on or around the treated areas. To aid in its healing, a firm garment such as Lycra is worn for 3 weeks. A day or two after surgery, patients are required to be on their feet without any vigorous activities whatsoever for the first 5 days. Patients can expect full recovery in 3 weeks, and may resume work and other normal activities. More importantly, patients can then expect flatter, and better contoured chests.
