Medical Microbiologist

The world has countless types of organisms, from every shape and color and every size. Medical microbiology is concerned with all the organisms that are really small and that can get inside the human body and cause problems. Medical microbiologists use the tools of microbiology and apply them to medicine. This field studies microscopic organisms like viruses, fungi, parasites and bacteria which can cause some humans to get sick, although some can be used to improve our health. More often, though, these organisms can affect humans and cause them to fall ill. Many of them can cause diseases, some of which are fatal. It is closely related to the study of pathology, the study of disease, and immunology, the study of the immune system.

Microbiologists specialize in diagnosing patients by getting some kind of sample, then testing the sample for a microscopic organism causing the problem. After the diagnosis is reached, then treatment can begin but microbiologists are less involved in the treatment process unless they specialize in infectious diseases. Microbiologists also serve a very important role in the general public health. They study ways to improve communicable disease prevention and it is one of the most studied fields in all of microbiology.

One of the biggest issues for medical microbiologist is parasites. Medical parasitology is one of medical microbiology's subspecialties and is the study of parasites and the relationship between them and their hosts (humans). One of the most common parasites is the plasmodium that causes malaria. Out of all the parasites that plague humans, the most common in the United States is the pinworm.

Interestingly, not all of microbiology is fighting against disease. In fact, much of their work includes making vaccines to viruses. All vaccines are a result of utilizing a virus that the body can fight off and develop an immunity to. For example, the flu vaccine that comes around every winter is a dead or weakened version of the flu that they believe will be the most prevalent. Many diseases that used to be prevalent are relatively rare or eradicated entirely such as polio and small pox, thanks to microbiology.
