Nuclear Medicine

Without the use of medical imaging, doctors and the field of medicine a like would have a lot more difficulty with diagnosing. Nuclear medicine makes a lot of medicine possible, using radioactive isotopes for diagnosis as well as harnessing their power for treatment. Nuclear medicine and imaging is therefore reliant on the process of radioactive decay. This type of medicine is extremely useful to the field of medicine as it can produce images that show the actual biological processes as they occur on a cellular and even subcellular level. It is different than the MRI or CT (sometimes called CAT) scan that only show an anatomical image of the body. This type of medicine requires not only the work of a physician (radiologist and a nuclear medicine physician), but also the expertise of a technologist, support personnel, engineers, instrument manufacturers, radiochemists, radiopharamacists and radiobiologists.

Nuclear medicine utilizes radiopharmaceuticals in order to diagnose and treat. For a diagnostic procedure, radioactive substances are given to the patient. These substances are extremely useful because they emit radioactivity which can be traced within the patient. Using a gamma camera (which creates images from gamma emitting radioisotopes), a positron emission tomography (which produces a three-dimensional imaging of a biological process within the body) or a SPECT (a single photon emission tomography) the desired biological effect can be reproduced in an image to assist in the patient diagnosis. Probes are also used to help diagnose by their ability to measure parts of the body, along with counters which are used to measure samples.

Nuclear medicine can also be used for treatment, although this a fairly new field of research. Radiopharmaceuticals, also know as radionuclides, can be administered to treat certain types of diseases, as well as work as pain relievers. Brachytherapy, a type of therapy where the patient is administered isotopes in a capsule form, is also a type of nuclear medicinal treatment. Sometimes, radioisotopes that are not found naturally within the human body (such as cobalt-60) are now being used in conjunction with radiation therapy medicine are being used therapeutically.
