Prostate Removal Surgery

Underlying Problem Requiring Prostate Removal Surgery:
For men experiencing prostate enlargement or even prostate cancer, prostate removal surgery may be the best option. The prostate gland is located under a man\'s bladder, and it surrounds the urethra. This gland naturally enlarges as a man ages, and as it does, it often creates excessive pressure on the urethra and bladder. In addition to causing problems urinating, this can also lead to urinary tract infections. Prostate removal surgery can improve or eradicate these issues.

Treatment:
There are a few possible approaches to prostate removal surgery. Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is the most commonly performed for an enlarged gland. Under a general or spinal anesthetic, a cytoscope is inserted into the penis and through the urethra. A cutting instrument is placed through the cytoscope and is used to cut and remove the prostate. At the same time, the doctor may cauterize severed blood vessels during the surgery.

Other types of prostate removal surgeries include the laser prostatectomy, a transurethral needle ablation (TUNA), and an open prostatectomy. The laser prostatectomy is an outpatient procedure that uses a laser to destroy the prostate tissue. The TUNA procedure is considered to be minimally invasive and uses a camera to guide a needle into the tissue in order to use ultrasound to destroy the tissue. The tissue will then shrink over the next several weeks. Finally, the open prostatectomy can also be used to remove a large prostate. An incision is made between the umbilicus and the penis under a general or spinal anesthetic.

Recovery from Prostate Removal Surgery:
The recovery required for a prostate removal surgery depends upon the procedure that is chosen, as well as the patient.s age and health. In the case of a TURP, a hospital stay of one to three days can be expected. An open prostatectomy may require a few days in the hospital, while the laser prostatectomy and transurethral needle ablation can both be done as outpatient procedures.
