Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

Underlying Problem Requiring Rhinoplasty:
Rhinoplasty is the name for a nose surgery that is done to improve either its function or appearance. In addition to being performed for cosmetic purposes, rhinoplasty is also used to correct birth defects and breathing problems, as well as to reverse the effects of trauma. Rhinoplasty can be used to alter the nose size, width, profile, and tip, as well as nostril size and symmetry.

Treatment:
Rhinoplasty is performed under either general or local anesthetic. The doctor will reshape the patient.s bone or cartilage in order to improve its function or appearance. This tissue can come from the septum or the concha of the ear. If bone is needed, it may be taken from the ribs or even the cranium. Finally, synthetic materials are sometimes used, as well.

A closed procedure is one where the incisions are inside the nose. An open incision, on the other hand, requires cuts to be made across the tissue that separates the nostrils (the columella). The soft tissues are raised through the incisions so that the doctor has access to the structure of the nose. This structure is sculpted, and then the skin and other soft tissues are redraped over the nose.

There is also a nonsurgical procedure available for rhinoplasty. This uses fillers to smooth and lift various points on a person's nose in order to make it more symmetrical. This is a non-permanent solution, however, lasting approximately eight to twelve months if calcium hydroxyapatite is used.

Recovery from Rhinoplasy:
If the doctor uses external sutures during rhinoplasty, they will usually be removed after four or five days. Bruising, however, can generally be expected to last for about two weeks. A cast will be removed after about a week, and any internal stents will usually remain for four to fourteen days. The nose may continue to change for up to a year after rhinoplasty before final results are permanent.
