Thyroid/Parathyroid:

Underlying Problem Requiring Thyroid/Parathyroid Treatments:
The thyroid/parathyroid refers to endocrine glands found in the neck. The parathyroid glands are found behind the main thyroid gland. The parathyroid glands help the body to control the amount of calcium that is in the blood and bones. The thyroid determines how the body should burn energy, as well as how it reacts to hormones.

Patients may need treatment in cases where the thyroid/parathyroid becomes either overactive or underactive. Generally speaking, the parathyroid glands will become overactive, causing hyperparathyroidism and leading to a calcium imbalance in the body. This can cause kidney stones and osteoporosis. An overactive or underactive thyroid can likewise cause serious health issues.

Treatment for the Thyroid/Parathyroid:

There are numerous ways in which the thyroid/parathyroid may be treated, and doctors and patients will typically work together to determine what is the best course of action for each case. It may be necessary for the thyroid/parathyroid to be entirely removed. In these cases, the patient will undergo general anesthesia, and the doctor will surgically examine each of the glands. Minimally invasive procedures utilizing an endoscope may be utilized to create less scarring and potentially faster post-operative recovery.

Not all patients with thyroid/parathyroid problems need surgical treatment. It is possible for some disorders to be treated with bisphosphonates or estrogen, for example.

Recovery from Thyroid/Parathyroid Treatments:

Patients undergoing non-surgical treatments for thyroid/parathyroid problems will need to follow their doctor's directions on the frequency and duration of treatments. Those undergoing a thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy, on the other hand, will have some post-operative recovery to consider. There will be some pain to deal with, although doctors will usually offer pain medication to help manage this discomfort. Swallowing may be difficult, as well. For the minimally-invasive types of surgery, the recovery period may require patients to stay in bed for a day or so, and IV nutrition may be needed to avoid swallowing. It may take two weeks or more for the patient to be ready to return to work and most other normal activities.
