Featured Treatment: SenoRx Contura

More effective radiation therapy for lumpectomy follow-up care is one of the best ways to increase both quality and quantity of life. Not only does radiation treatment offer higher rates of long-term survival, but new innovations mean that it no longer has to take up a substantial portion of the post-surgical care plan.

Radiation therapy is necessarily limited by the amount of access the technician has to the affected area. The more concentrated the radiation to the affected area, the lower the chances of the cancer returning at a future date. For breast cancer patients, this means that reaching as much of the tissue surrounding the lumpectomy site as possible is ideal for successful recovery rates. SenoRX has developed a way to do just this with the Contura. Multi-Lumen Balloon (MLB) Catheter.

As a form of balloon therapy, the Contura Catheter is different from conventional methods. It uses vacuum suction to draw in the irregularly-shaped cavity left over following a lumpectomy. This means it can administer radiation to the most amount of surface area possible using a combination of the vacuum technology and its multiple radiation source lumens.

The Contura device is part of a new class of treatment options designed to reduce the total amount of time spent undergoing radiation therapy, offering a five-day care plan as opposed to the traditional six weeks. This means that patients can get all the care they need in a more concentrated form, allowing them to get back to their lives - and their recovery - as soon as possible, but without ever sacrificing results.

For SenoRX, the company behind this new device, Contura is just one part of their lineup, which moves through everything from breast cancer detection innovations to biopsy and marking technologies. It is focused on finding the most minimally-invasive options in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment options, so that patients and their doctors can achieve successful conclusions without requiring an intensive time commitment.

Featured Physician: Dr. Danee S. Young, M.D., FACOG

In 1989, I started my medical practice. In 1996, I established Total Concept HealthCare now known as BEST CAREmed, a comprehensive health care facility, which is designed to create an environment where women can feel safe, comfortable and informed about their health care options. Working with physician assistants who have been personally trained by me, we emphasize primary care for women as the core of our services. Our work environment promotes a team approach to patient's needs so that all of us are an active part of your care.

As my children have grown up, my practice has changed. I originally did not do Obstetrics when I first arrived in Cache Valley so that I could be available for my son and daughter. I returned to Obstetrics for approximately 8 years. However, following the advice from many of my patients as my children headed into their teens, I stopped Obstetrics for the last time. For the last 4 years, our office has focused on providing women with alternatives to hysterectomy. Although I do hysterectomies (with an emphasis on minimally invasive procedures), we have reduced our rate by 80% for all of those years. If we tell you that you need a hysterectomy, you can feel confident that it is your best choice.
